Dr. Serghei Mangul: Associate Professor and incoming Director, Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB), Jagiellonian University
Dr. Serghei Mangul is an Associate Professor and the incoming Director of the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB) at Jagiellonian University in Kraków. He specializes in designing and applying novel data-driven computational approaches to accelerate the integration of omics and biomedical data into translational research and education, with a deep commitment to advancing the principles of reproducibility, data sharing, and software usability. Previously, Dr. Mangul served as an Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics at the University of Southern California and as Director of Challenges and Benchmarking at Sage Bionetworks. As a member of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Board of Regents Working Group on the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) Strategic Transformation, he works to accelerate scientific discovery through large-scale data reuse. Dr. Mangul earned his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from Georgia State University and a B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Moldova State University, and completed his postdoctoral training in computational genomics with Prof. Eskin at UCLA. He is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award, and the ISCB Honorable Mention Award for Sustainability. Beyond his research, Dr. Mangul is a dedicated mentor and educator, having served the NIH AIM-AHEAD Leadership Fellowship and the NCATS Training Program in Advanced Data Analysis, and is a passionate advocate for making bioinformatics education accessible to all.
Abstract
How can we be sure our bioinformatics tools are reliable? This talk is about robust benchmarking and large-scale data reuse, and how the two together are changing computational biology.
Dr. Mangul also shared details of fellowship opportunities (covering accommodation and registration) for the EEBG course in Kraków.
