Abstract

Microbiology was completely revolutionized with the development of culture-independent sequencing methods. Combined with advanced sequencing technologies, these techniques let researchers examine microbes within their communities rather than individually, and microbial ecology grew rapidly as a field.

The volume of sequencing data that followed presented unprecedented challenges. Traditional microbiologists had to adapt, acquiring skills in molecular biology, microbial ecology and computational biology. This talk explores how those methodological advances transformed our understanding of human biology (revealing humans as part of a collection of trillions of microbes) and how computational approaches were essential to that shift.
